It is, an has always been legal/constitutional for a child to pray in school.
The unconstitutional part is, as you mentioned, to make it mandatory. School teachers and administrators must be seen as leaders in a classroom, and so for an authority figure to lead prayer in school would be inappropriate, in particular for those who choose not to raise their children in a religious environment. If a teacher wishes to pray, they may do so, on their own, as well.
There is nothing, in my mind, wrong with prayer in school, if it is mad eabsolutely clear to the students that it is not their obligation to do so, as well as inform the parents ahead of time so they may discuss it with their children and come to a conclusion about how they will handle the situation on an indivdual basis.
If one wants their child to pray in school, by all means tell them to do so as a parent. There is never anything wrong with prayer. It is not a public school's responsibility, or right to place a religious belief system on any child. That is something best left to families.
If one wants their child to be raised with a religious base, it should surely be the families sole responsibility to instill this belief.
