The forward amplifier I am suggesting is a single channel amplifier with 50 dB of gain.
This amplifier has 6 dB noise fig. and since you mention 48 dB S/N, with a + 10 dBmV input in this amp, you then can get + 55 dBmV output and you'll get 63 dB C/N noise ((59-(10-6))  of that amp. with should worsen the C/N signal by 0.09 dB at the output of the multi tap.

I said it was not practical and most cable company won't do it, but it is feasible if they want to do it this way.

As for the return a cable modem using KPSQ or 16 QAM signal can have an output of 55 dBmV on the return frequency and that should not be a problem to hit the multi tap with a decent level.
Not bad for a railway engineer.
