Police say a subcontractor killed this morning near downtown was installing fiber-optic cable for CDE Lightband at the time.

Police spokesman Jim Knoll said the 44-year-old man is not being identified pending notification of his family, and the investigation into the death is continuing.

"His co-workers saw him slumped over in a bucket truck and brought him down and started CPR," Knoll said. "He was transported to the hospital where he died."

He said police are assisting the city's Risk Management Department's investigation.

CDE Lightband officials also were on the scene off Spring Street, almost directly behind Montgomery County Animal Control. The incident happened just after 10 a.m.

Earlier, Bruce Walker, CDE operations division manager, said the man was employed by Nexus Communications, which a subcontractor for OnTrac, a contractor of CDE Lightband.

"We have no information yet about the cause or the circumstances of what happened," he said just after 1 p.m., adding that he and other CDE officials were at the location.

A 44-year-old contractor who was running fiber optic cables along North Spring Street died at Gateway Medical Center Wednesday morning from undetermined cause. The unidentified contractor was spotted slumped in the bucket of a lift truck; identification is being withheld pending notification next of kin.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:43 a.m. Wednesday. His coworkers spotted him, lowered the bucket and began CPR. The crew was installing CDE Lightband at the time.

On August 4, 2010, around 9:43 am, a 44 year old man died while running fiber optic line in the tree line area of 616 North Spring Street. A coworker saw the man slumped over in the bucket of the lift truck. The man was taken out of the bucket and CPR was administered. The cause of the man’s death is under investigation.

According to CPD Information Officer Jim Knoll, CDE Operations Division Manager Bruce Walker said the man was employed by Nexus Communications, a subcontractor for CDE Lightband contractor OnTrac.
