A.T.&T. U-Verse is not fiber to the home (not around here anyway), it is an HFTP (hybrid fiber twisted pair) similar to the HFC architecture cable uses. The cable companies that have smaller nodes (fewer passings per node) are actually closer to the home with fiber than A.T.&T. is.
