This already exists in Bresnan's architecture to a degree but more so in FTTH expansions of existing coax systems such as MideRivers employs in their Montana systems.
The writing is on the wall -cable companies have to close the last mile to compete. The bandwidth demand/capability will triple in the next 10 years. Coax with all its connectors and power won't be able to handle the speed. Not to mention the water trough created at 1490nm will play hell in a "loose" coax based architecture.
