DWDM and passive optical is the only way to go
It's not about the speed, it's about the bandwidth and cost.
The CATV's of the world dumped too much money into the hybrid coax systems and will never afford to close the last mile. They made their bed, no they've got to lay in it. The FTTH systems coming online the past few years are leaps and bounds ahead in terms of infrastructure cost, not to mention silly arse maintenance on power sucking electronics. Forget all those actives in the field....old skool technology
