Honestly, if you're a single person with no real ties to any one spot, then you can make some decent cash. Of course, you'll need to hit a lucky streak and get the jobs, have no breakdowns (truck, gear, tools, yourself) and not have to replace anything out of your own pocket. I had a streak once myself where I made $42k in 3 months, but that contract ran out, no work to be had, and I was out of it for a while.

However, if married w/ or w/o kids, contractor is tough and in my opinion, not worth it. Having had to spend about 2.5 years away from my now 3 year old daughter, I can speak from experience. Don't let greed now get in the way of happiness later. $12/hr is manageable.
