We do alot of work on large Sonet enviroments. We see FDP's (Fiber Distribution Panels) where the HE techs have not managed slack in the best possible methods. Where jumpers are concerned, techs should refrain from using a 6m jumper in a situation where a 1m would have worked. jumpers are factory terminated and polished and service slack is not necessary. I agree with the use of ADC products, but any product won't correct lack of common sense. Headend equipment is rarely relocated within racks more that a few RU's. We see techs using a 10m jumper between bulkheads located adjacent Relay Racks. A resolution to excessive slack is proper training and a variety of jumper lengths. Service slack on the OSP cabling is another story. We use a standard 18-24'. We have relocated demark equipment on several occasions where this slack has become invaluable. We have seen contractors prep the cable and leave exposed buffer tube for the service slack. Our techs do not do this due to the risk of damage at the point-of-prep during a relocate. Every tech has his own method, but most agree that service slack for OSP cable is a must. Managing this is mostly common sense.
